Description
So small and light that you won’t even notice it in your pack. The Scout features a symmetrical with additional volume in the bow and stern, which allows the Scout to be used as a full-fledged backcountry packraft in addition to its regular duties as a canyoneering and mountain lake specialist.
Open: The Scout is available only in the open build configuration. We are not offering spray decks or self bailing configurations for the Scout as it is primarily designed as a minimalist boat.
Cargo Fly Zipper: The Cargo Fly is the ultimate packraft gear storage solution featuring an airtight zipper installed in the stern of the boat to allow you to load your gear inside the tubes. The system provides drier and more secure gear storage and improved paddling performance due to a lower center of gravity. The Scout Cargo Fly zippers is shorter than our standard Cargo Fly zippers, but still adequate to fit most medium sized stuff sacks and small (non-frame) backpacks). The Scout’s extra small tubes are not compatible with our internal dry bags.
Hull: Proprietary 210-denier high count nylon, single side laminated with a lightweight pigmented polyurethane film (Made in USA). This is the same fabric used in the Caribou, which optimizes packability and weight savings while maintaining sufficient tear strength for the Scout’s intended uses.
Floor: Proprietary 420-denier nylon, laminated on both sides with polyurethane film (Made in USA).
Seat: 200-denier oxford nylon, with single side polyurethane laminate (Made in USA).
Accessories: All grab loops and similar attachments are manufactured in house in Mancos, Colorado out of scrap floor materials and USA made webbing. Small parts and fasteners are Made in USA, when available, and sourced from industry leaders like Duraflex, YKK, and ITW-Nexus.

**Packed size is a reference measurement based on folding each lengthwise edge of the boat to the center and rolling from the bow. There are many other methods of rolling and folding the boats that will result in a different packed size that may be more or less efficient for packing depending on the situation.
***Max Capacity is the maximum total weight (paddlers and cargo) that the boat can reasonably carry in flatwater under ideal conditions. Actual capacity for any given trip will vary widely based on the paddler’s skill and water conditions. Please review our weight carrying capacity guide for further details.
When we originally started Alpacka Raft, the concept of a packraft was incredibly simple. Just a lightweight boat that you could fit in a pack and use to cross rivers, paddle out into lakes, and eat up the miles on a long traverse. Over the years, the packraft concept has evolved substantially to become the lightweight, warm, dry, and whitewater worthy boats found in our Alpacka Series, Whitewater Series, and Cargo Series.
Early on, as we started bringing new ideas into the Alpacka Series like spray decks, we realized the need to continue to offer a packraft that spoke to the original elemental concept that originally brought us into the sport. We introduced the Scout in 2008 to meet that need and little has changed since that time. To keep it simple and lightweight, we made the Scout with 10-inch diameter tubes and absolutely no bells and whistles.
For latest Scout brings a little bit of both worlds. First, working with new lighter fabrics including a 400-denier floor material, we were able to cut the weight down to 2.8 pounds. Second, we recognized that even the most elemental packraft still can use a few creature comforts so we came up with an optional seat that you can bring or leave at home depending on your adventure.
